They are comfy as fuck for general purpose on pavement and I also day hike and hunt in them. They are re-soleable which is a great feature, and the leather upper is pretty damn water proof. Worn with cheapo gaters I would bet they are leagues better than nice gore-tex boots. They also look nice, which is a plus.
Also, dat red wing customer service- free laces for life and they'll oil and shine your boots for free, for life.
They are shit for long distance backpacking though. Heavy as fuck and I eventually blister my heel unless I have been wearing the boots exclusively for months leading up to the trip.
So I am relegating them to cold weather duty and general purpose around town wear.
