Damaging a tree's bark is pretty bad for it, especially in a high-density campsite like that.
For my hammock, I use pieces of seatbelt straps for my hammock (they're like 2" thick), although most people I know just put their spare socks, sticks, cardboard, or something in-between the rope and the tree.
