I take my dog hiking all the time. It’s strange, because I can let him off the leash on and off trail and he behaves, but he always darts out of the driveway at home. When we are hiking though, he won’t even stray out of eyeshot. Not something I had to train him on, I think good dogs just have a sense to stay with their pack.
If he ever gets caught up sniffing something and realizes I’m several yards ahead, he’ll run until he’s caught up and walking with me. Never had an issue with him and we share such a trust.
Always make sure to bring water for your dog though. They make portable water bottle/dog bowl things which are a must.
My dog is a mutt but his main breed is a pointer. Such a lovely dog. A wonderful temper and has such a desire to stick close to me when we are together. He’s a reliable dog and I never feel lonely with him. Man’s best friend. He likes to sit out by the fire with me and helps keep me warm on cold nights too.
If you take your dog hiking with you or camping, a heart worm and tick preventative is an absolute must.
