Their seeds germinate much later than tomatoes when they are both in the ground and come up as volunteers. Also, if you can feel the tomatillo fruit through the husk because it is pressing against the husk you can harvest it. The ones I started indoors with my tomatoes are doing really well and I have already had a harvest from those. The ones that came up on their own are only now just getting to harvest point. I've harvested tomatoes 3 times now.

The device you shove in the ground can have all manner of differences in soil moisture and conductivity which can affect readings.
