Never actually spoken with a USDA forester but if you're thinking of getting into the field, go for private industry if you can. Pays much better (usually) and it's a lot easier to get a full time position. Many of the entry level forest service jobs are seasonal and I've heard it's pretty tough to get away from that cycle.
