The technique has pros and cons. Generally speaking pros include: less/no soil erosion because soil is always covered; less time and resources spent on soil prep; soil aggregates are more stable; soil biology is more active
cons include: more difficult pest/weed management; no loosening so less aeration and soil takes longer to warm up in spring
For more info look up: conservation tillage, no-dig, no-till; but be warned: there are a lot of philosophical, almost religious discussions around the topic. there's pros and cons to each system, one is not simply superior over the other. It depends on soil type, climate, ect.
