Any geology-buffs here who could help explain to me the topography of Linville Gorge and how it formed? It is very steep, the steepest gorge in the east maybe even (correct me if I'm wrong, at the very least in the SE I think), but it flattens out completely at the edges. Many other gorges continue lengthwise for a long time, just in a less steep way. But Linville seems to basically flatten out completely just a few miles from the steepest part. What sort of pressure waves or environment would create this shape?
