This seems to be the most appropriate place to share my story. Two days ago, I was hiking deep in Michigan's Huron-Manistee national forest, searching for certain wildflower, the Cardinal flower (which I did find, but only two flowers the entire day), and as I was hiking back to my truck around 7pm, I turned around the curve of the trail and saw in front of me about 100 feet away, a coyote, carrying an animal in its mouth. It had to have been a fresh kill because it was still bloody. I have seen coyotes out in farm fields when I driven through the countryside, but never have I seen one before "in person", and never within 100 feet. I was both startled and excited. I am sure the coyote was aware of my presence, it could probably smell me long before I could see it, but it never looked in my direction and kept walking forward, disappearing behind a hill. I took my phone out as fast as I could and started recording a video. I slowly approached the location where I had seen it last, one hand holding my phone recording the video, the other hand holding a hunting knife. But sadly, I never saw the coyote again after I lost sight of it. I wish I could have gotten a picture or video. I might never see another one in the wild like that again. It was very strange seeing a dog-like creature trotting through the trees. And I have to admit, I was very scared, even though I know coyotes are not that tough. The end.
