Well /out/, my dream is finally coming true. Me and a pal are packing up his car with a lifetime's accumulation of camping gear, and we're setting off to try and find out what kind of trouble we can get into (or stay out of!).
We've got a pretty good chunk of things put together, but there are still some holes in our gear list. If you guys could give me a little insight into what I should look for (with the knowledge that we'll be in the car for a good portion of time, but still doing multi-day outings at the various parks and nice places. We'll be attempting to camp and use paper navigation AMAP ("as much as possible", punny- right?)
Anyways, the things we're in need of that I figured you all would be helpful for finding. The meat and potaters of this thread.
>Stove
I like the whitegas stoves more than canisters, but I don't know enough about them to justify the more than 2x price...... Any thoughts?
>Filter
I was checking out the sawyer, or a gravity feed bag. Again....... any thoughts? I like the sawyer for it's size and price, but is it the real deal?
>Head lamp
Mine got destroyed in a drunken rage (not my drunken rage). I guess the only real questions to ask about this would be lumens and BD or petzl?
>Coffee maker?
I love coffee. Help me not have to buy a cup every morning. My press is only good for one cup at a time, and is thusly bullshit.
>Good books for the road?
I've got "The Abominable" and Freedom of The Hills, but other than that I've exhausted my home library. This is a dire situation indeed.
>Good food for the road?
I'm no chef, but I like to eat..... If left to me, it'll be hamburgers every night with pancakes every morning, than we'll get scurvy and die.
So, that's what we need. We'll be leaving the Old Dominion headed for the Windy City (Friend has a friend there, not my ideal way to start. It'll be fun anyways). From there, it's off the the Mile High City via 80, up to Wyoming (are there any nicknames for Wyoming?)
