Pic related made up about 80% of the trees on the island and the whole lot got killed off by DED in the 70s and early 80s and any weak stragglers that remained got knocked down by the storm in 1987.
The Elm was the perfect tree at the time - wind and salt resistant, excellent timber and a lovely fastigiate habit that was ideal for street planting.
