I forgot to mention that Osage Orange is a favorite among american bowyers. It's said to be the best there is for making flatlimbed bows.
For arrows I recommend ~8mm pine dowelling. I superglue parts of feathers/quills I collect myself on before I also wrap the ends of the fletching with a thin string. I tend to bring the wrapping behind the fletching all the way back to the nock to avoid the arrow splitting by the tremendous forces exerted on them by my amateurish childbows.
For string, flemish twist quality linen thread, Dacron B-50 or something called FastFlight. Make a nice colorful serving with any thin sowing thread you have. I like black cotton.
I've never made an archerytarget but I had an idea of taking a few thick sheets of that stuff you insulate the engine compartment in your car with and gluing them together.
