River water in the Rockies, probably has heavy metals from mining and I for one will filter and treat it. Water from a high stream, chemical treatment should be fine. River water from the Rio Grande, flocculation with alum, filter, and chemical treat. There are countless scenarios and part of being an adept /out/doorsman is knowing when to do what.
