Sucks up vast quantities of water from the ground thus outcompeting native species. THe water courses in southern Utah especially have been hard hit by it and to a lesser extent in New Mexico. Around Moab, BLM has burned a lot of it along the Colorado River and they have imported and released a beetle that only eats tamarisk. It's a bitch to get rid of.
