You don't really need much besides proper clothing for the weather/activity, appropriate footwear for the terrain (trailrunners unless going off the beaten path, in which case B/C grade boots, or D-grade if mountaineering), a shelter, sleeping system, and a comfortable backpack to put it all in. Add a hydration system and trekking poles if you're feeling fancy. A water filtration system and cooking gear if you're going to be multiple days removed from civilisation.
