GPS watches are more or less teh same thing in terms of GPS specs, just with a smaller screen and shittier battery life.
Foretrex's marketing point is its form factor. Reasonable-size screen for backcountry navigation with easy access.
The handheld ones have either buttons on the back for a belt clip (Rino, 60-series) or pouches (76/78 series) with belt loops. They'd probably fit well in a mag pouch too.
Garmin GPS12 internals. Split it apart to add a shield below the patch antenna, had problems with interference from the spark plugs/coils on my sled.
