Most ambush predators and scavengers are the least thing you have to fear, they rarely bother people and almost always go for easy meals over anything they have to struggle for (a full grown adult human for instance). What you actually do have to worry about are territorial nonpredators who's behavior is not based on sensible needs, but instead on something irrational and instinctual. A bull moose in a rut for instance is nearly a tonne of muscle and rage and will charge your ass down. A bear with cubs in the area can tear the shit out of you. I live in puma country too and I'd take one of those pussies any day.
