Hatchet is not better in every respect as you can split more accurately (and faster when you get down to splitting things to a smaller size), as well as the reasons listed above. You also don't have to change tools. You split a log down a bunch and then you still have your knife in your hand to make a featherstick, and then you can strike your ferro rod with the same tool, too. It's just a more simple and faster way of going from log to fire.
It's also safer to do when fatigued and tired. You don't need a massive knife to baton. You can use something like a Condor Bushlore, which is pretty widely regarded as a normal sized blade.
If you have to split a log with a bigger diameter than the length of the knife blade, you start by taking bits off the edges. A hatchet isn't too heavy, it's just another bit of kit to take and maintain for what is most likely going to be a two or three night stay.
