It cast him as a tragic figure, sure, but that's kind of how Herzog rolls. But it didn't say, oh, he was a true hero or anything. Instead, it seemed to be a meditation on the overwhelming passion of a man who didn't fully understand what he was doing. The passion saved him from one kind of doom (he was a drug addict loser before the Alaska deal, iirc) only to deliver him to another (bears).
tl;dr sorry you dislike timothy treadwell, but it's a great movie and deserves to be on the list. Deal with it.
