I live in Indianapolis. Michigan has some nice forest. I can't remember them off the top of my head. There are some HUGE PARKS in the UP
The best forest in Indiana is the Hoosier National Forest near Bloomington. You can hike in and camp where ever you want.
I did a couple of overnight trips to the Deam Wilderness this fall (part of the HNF). Had an amazing time! I've walked nearly every trail in the park. It's really hilly, so prepare your legs for the hike in. Buts its beautiful. Especially camping on lake Manroe. I went on a weekday in late august and NO ONE was there. I hiked 10 miles to my campsite and didn't pass a soul, which I thought was legit.
However, I went two weeks ago and hunters had already started preparing their stands for deer season and I heard several gunshots before I went to sleep. They allow hunting in the park. I would suggest avoiding the Deam wilderness till after hunting season or maybe wait till spring. It was really annoying.
