I eat a lot of nuts while camping, and love birds, so I usually spread my turds on flat surfaces along the trail. Signposts are the best. At first I was squeamish about getting my hands dirty, but baby wipes do wonders. Overall the practice is an ecologically minded way to give back to nature. Watching warblers and wren pecking at the wooden signs I've smeared is a treat in itself.
