>>2500651I'm in zone 5, i soaked my walnuts for a day then planted all the ones that didn't float and left them on my back porch over the winter. Only one of the roughly 10 grew but I collected pretty late in the year when they were getting pretty dry. As others have said it's kind of a waste of time, I only planted mine because they were from a small clump of exclusively nut cultivars rather than normal black walnut and figured they might give me something interesting. If you just want generic black walnut go to your state tree nursery and buy some.
