A centerfire cartridge will store for longer and still operate in suboptimal conditions much better than any rimfire round. Also a .22lr pistol won’t really be good for anything a lot larger than a squirrel. A .22lr rifle is marginally better velocity wise at least. You still have the issue of dirty cheap unreliable ammunition that most people buy. If you’re worried about predators (bear, mountain lion), then .22lr won’t do shit. If you’re worried about people, .22lr is fine I suppose. Just get a BFR is .45-70
