Alright here's the deal. This is all you need down to like -40C.
Fucking layers and leave out the cotton bullshit.
Head:
Get a thick balaclava, a trapper hat, and a long, lightweight merino buff. That's all you'll ever need for any situation.
Invest in a nice pair of sunglasses with side shields and variable tint, or get a pair of skii goggles with variable tint if it's real fucked outside.
Upper body:
Baselayer, thin if warm, thicker if cold up to 400g/m^2. Wool is the best, but up to you.
Mid layer that ZIPS and no hood. Lightweight synthetic puffy that breathes is best, up to 60g insulated. Breathable fleece if you prefer, but make sure it breathes and wicks and has a fucking zipper.
Hardshell with a big ol hood that ZIPS my guy. Double front zip, pit or core zips for venting.
Reinforcement layer on top of everything when you are sitting around, a big fucking down puffy.
Hands:
Thin merino gloves
Insulated mitt with removable insulation. Get ones with wrist clip/leash.
Hardshell overmitt.
Lower body:
Lightweight merino long john silvers. Leave that heavy shit behind, your legs stay warm as fuck when you're active.
Any pants you want, as long as they are not cotton and they block some wind but breathe/wick well.
Hardshell pants with full seperating side zips for easy on/off/venting.
Gaiters, waterproof.
Reinforcement layer over top when you get to camp. Down pants, full side separating zips.
Feet:
Thin merino socks
Thicker wool socks
One THICK ASS pair of knee length wool socks, 600g/m^2 or 800g/m^2 just in case.
Boots with removable insulation liner.
Waterproof down booties at camp.
Snowshoes if you need.
Brands don't matter, but some features do.
Sometimes material weave matters more than the specific material.
Don't be one of those ultralight fuckers in the winter, be prepared.
