You're going to be leaning forward with these to balance the tang of the bags weight. For a 20l bag that shouldn't be a big deal, because you probably won't have over 20-30 pounds in that thing.
Seriously though, people 50-100 years ago were making do with what they had. It may not be optimal, but it is definitely functional. If it is their g1000 it will take waterproofing well enough for most rain.
