I know people that do this all the time and the end result is normally them getting sick of it throwing it away after it sitting in the freezer for a year. Only keep/kill what you can eat is an unspoken rule that applies to fishing as well as hunting.
Also that vintage photo from 1898 is why Murray Cod are an endangered species now, at least in South Australia. Thanks to these fucks killing every single one they could find a century ago, it's rare to catch one here. Luckily they are protected for the most part and the average fisherman has the common sense to let one of the largest freshwater species in the world go back into the water after catching one.
