Clearly, its a relatively dry environment. Its designated sage grasslands and volcanic hills. But its not by any means a "barren wasteland". There is a large river (big hole) running right thru the pic with very lush riparian habitat supporting a world class fishery. There are moose, elk, deer, big horn sheep, pronghorn all throughout this habitat. There used to be tons of Bison in the area as well as there is a buffalo jump nearby. The surounding mts support grizzlies, lions and wolves. If one's mind is open and informed then one would know there is a lot of life in this pic and its in no way a "barren wasteland"
