I won't use one for a straight blade because I want a wide contact area to give me a more accurate edge angle. Then again, I'm 46 years old and don't care to spend more time than necessary sharpening. I want to have a blade shaving sharp with a reasonably smooth finish (because the edge will last longer with a smoother finish as the uneven portions of the metal won't be as large and won't catch and deform, which is what dulls knives) in the minimum time. I just bought some diamond hones in more coarse grit because I've got some serious work to do on a couple of knives I'm restoring. I'll put a thread over in /diy/ when I do the Ka-Bar, it was Navy issued in WWII to a friend's grandfather and went to hell and I'm fixing it up for him. The handle will be spalted mango with a hidden tang and the guard will be integral to the wood, kind of like pic related.
