I just recently tried cleaning it out with an iso soaked paper towel for the first time. Didn't realize it was getting all gunked up with some black shit. Could be wrong but I swear that black shit is the rubber that's degraded from the heating element. Today I even saw a piece of the rubber the size of a grain of rice floating in the water when I was about to dump it out. I know the manual says to use distilled water, and I know lots of people use tap but I use RO water since I figured its the next best thing. I hope I'm just worrying over nothing but these things ain't cheap and I don't want to burn a +1k hole in my pocket
