I am also in the process of finding a grip wax - I would like ideally to make my own pine tar, but for the time being, I'm finding that soft black licorice, rubbed over the kick zone, provides an excellent - the sugars + waxy nature of the candy glides very well over snow, but have an excellent "bite" to grip with, especially once it cools.
Using only one piece of licorice, I covered the bases of both skis.
To make the poles, I cut down a 3 year old maple tree (I have many on the property, and it's part of forest management best practice anyways.)
