I started by boiling the water and beans for an hour and 15 minutes (or until beans are soft), threw in the other ingredients, shook in less than 1/4 tsp of yeast because that's too much for one meal, stirred over the heat for a minute then took it off the heat and covered with a lid for about 10 minutes (just like the Mountain House food). The result was hearty and well portioned. I'm unsure of how similar it tastes to the Mountain House beef stew. I might have to try it and post a comparison later. But I give it a 10/10 the recipe works and would eat it again.
