I agree fjallraven has a lot of overpriced crap but their g1000 is what made them famous. Also, if you have a store in your area, I believe they will rewax it and repair it if anything goes wrong with it. If it is too damaged beyond repair, they will replace it.
With that said, I think some of their designs stink. They lack armpit vents which an unbreathable material (wax) could use. And they tend to be too short to protect your trousers too.
I use british cs95 (the pcs smock they make now is same material) that is a 50/50 polycotton instrad of 65/35 like outback/fjallraven g1000. Essentially they are just a tightly woven but still breathable material. Compared to a tradition Filson or duster oilskin that will be 100% cotton and carhartt weight to achieve the same durability, the polyester will help the material dry extremely fast.
The Cs95 is unwaxed. Waxing takes a few hours. You can buy a tech wash from rei or other places that adds water proofness.
The reality of these garments is they will never be as waterproofness is they will never be as waterproof as the first year you buy a goretex or polyurethane coated garment or the totally unbreathable poncho/trashbag/silnylon waterproof materials, but it will breathe much better than the other two, tend to be very durable, and can usually dry fairly quick.
I fished with polycotton earlier this year in the open when it rained 80% of the day and within the periods it didnt rain my garment was already drying out.
By the time I got home, my jacket, my midlayer (stanfield wool) were totally dry and my cotton undershirt was the only thing still wet.
Now I know people love the fjallraven vidda pants, but I wasnt a fan. Just use cheap dickies 874 which are loose enough to dry pretty fast and also 65/35 polycotton.
