I think there's an added benefit of making you slightly taller, walk with a little bit of a strut and flexing your legs in an attractive manner. French noblemen would flex their calves when they'd bow to ladies in an attempt to impress them.
Currently they're important on job sites because you can stand on a ladder safely and for a hell of a lot longer.
