If your pack weighs 30lb without food or water then you probably want the ankle support, but if it weighs 12lb you don't need it at all. Plus add on hunting gear and the need to pack out 90lbs of dead animal and suddenly the sturdy boots become essential
But you're right, since most of /out/ carries a lot of over designed, too heavy gear or things surplus to requirement (boots AND camp shoes, for example, when they could just put their dry feet and socks in breadbags and put their shoes back on, or an axe, a saw AND a knife when they could lose the axe or the knife) they could streamline and then enjoy a lightweight boot like this
