Missouri has lots of great state parks and beautiful backcountry. When I say there are state parks, I mean it. They're fucking everywhere. I can think of more than a couple less than 30 minutes away.
The farther you get away from I-35 and US-36, the prettier it's gonna be. Basically everywhere outside of the towns, cities, and farm land here is pretty. Property owners are pretty nice, and the fishing is fun (not sure how it compares to some other places).
If you're thinking of moving here, I'd recommend it. Pretty easy to find a few acres 20 minutes away from the nearest small town.
There's a lot of great places to kayak (Black River, the Missouri river, etc.).
