In my experience, every area I've wanted to sleep in has had a flat spot large enough for my tent, though sometimes I've needed to spend another 5 minutes looking or traveling. Not every area has had anything to hang a hammock from (pic related). It's not about being inflexible, it's about being miles from the nearest passable mounting point of any sort.
If you travel with hiking poles anyway then a bivvy mode might seem like a better option I suppose.
