>>2524891this probably isn't what you were saying, but i'll take the chance to discuss a technique i've been working on recently. i find that searching the internet for something like "pipe smoking technique" gives basically 0 results that are worth a damn. it's mostly boomers complaining about people inhaling or young people whining about not enjoying this hobby. here is what i've been working on, hopefully it helps newer folks.
first off, it's FINE to have to relight. not abnormal at all, especially on a new pipe, or if your filter is a little old, or if you're smoking just-opened leaf (or highly aromatic) as the moisture content will be higher inherently.
second, it's actually a good idea to proactively tamp and re-light after the first minute or two. this helps spread the embers around some and keep the bowl evenly lit.
goals of this technique:
>keep a constant light drag on the bowl at nearly all times>breathe normally, or even meditatively>NEVER inhale (unless that's your thing, in which case ignore this)ok so here are my thoughts:
>practice dragging through the bowl without using your lungs or diaphragm at all>if you're a band nerd, a word you might have heard was embouchure, which is french for "doing shit with your mouth / lips">basically, you're going to seal your mouth up and pull a slight vacuum using your facial muscles NOT your lungs>you probably already do this, but it's something specifically to practice modulating to get a slow drag without opening your throat to your mouth>now practice breathing while doing that cheek-drag technique>slow everything down to a crawl, so that you're breathing slow and dragging soft enough to just keep the ember liti shoot for 4 deep breaths per drag
this gives the smoke a ton of time in your mouth to absorb, it keeps the flame very healthily lit, and makes the entire experience more meditative, which is one reason i smoke.
