Floods are the ultimate challenge. Especially alone. You round the bend to find a huge mass of trees (Strainer) you had better think fast since you're doing 4-8 mph. I never lost a boat or gear because after 1,500 miles I aquired alot of knowledge. I will say this DO NOT TRY a flood until you are an expert and even then its pretty risky. These small rivers can rise 15 ft. in an hr. so you really need to stay weather alert and monitor the river levels constantly. A little trick is to jam a stick in the gravel at the waters edge and monitor it. If it starts rising fast you have a few choices get out of Dodge or pack out. I never packed out because I chose a campsite on the inside of a bend with a hill behind me to escape to if needed. Floating out in a flood at night is suicide, never attempt it. I could go on and on about gear, mind set, conditions, resources etc..........
