you can go out and catch fish with much less than they tell you that you need
if you buy a fly rod, a 9'2x leader, a spool of tipppet to top up that 2x leader, and a couple bead head krystal buggers you can go to almost any body of water and catch fish. add in a few soft hackles and a spool of 4x tippet and you can catch fish in any body of water with fish over 4 inches. it can be absolutely autistic, sure, but it can also be simple.
