It depends on the region where you're at, in the American south, hunting fishing and general fucking off all happens in the middle of no where, as a teen, we'd all try to find the most secluded and dark areas to make big ass fires and drink a lot, plus deer hunting was popular where I was at and that requires you to walk to your tree stand in complete darkness for ~20 minutes, so overtime you get used to it.
I can see how people would be afraid, when I was a kid, and still sometimes when I go out in the pitch dark, you get a feeling of dread knowing you're alone, but you snap out of it.
