I got invited on a fairly rigorous day hike along unmarked NorCal coastline that required timing the tides in order to get around rocky outcrops on both sides of a beach that would otherwise be submerged and leave us stranded until the tides changed again. I didn't have any true /out/ gear so I shoved my water bottle and extra layers into a garbage bag and went in running sneakers.
It was a terrific experience that I would have missed out on if I didn't just get out there.
