It takes practice to not lose lures. When you feel like you're getting hung up go really slow. Try to drag the lure over the obstacle rather than jerk it over. Usually if you go straight to jerking it you'll rather set the hook into whatever cover you're in or you'll take the line up in a branch or something. Pegging your weight can help.
I'd go out and buy some kind of stick bait (senkos, yum dingers, ect). These are pretty hard to hang up, just remember to go slow with them since they don't sink very fast. Other than that some lead weights, and zoom soft plastics are cheap enough that you shouldn't feel too bad about losing them.
Also, if you head south down cahaba river road it looks like there's a neighborhood/apartment complex you could park at to get access if its not too sketchy. Or at the end of Lake Park circle looks like a little parking lot. Some of the most fun fishing I've had is wet wading super shallow creeks in Austin and catching feesh.
tl;dr go slow, and take the time to learn how to avoid snags in heavy cover. You WILL lose lures, but you'll lose less as you fish more.
