i did the whole trip for about 3k USD, and that's pretty generous. People do similar stuff for half that.
Some people are on the road for years at a time, like this Japanese dude i met in the Grand Canyon. They usually have some way of supporting themselves, like advertising from a blog or photography. sometimes people just stop and work for a while to save up and keep going.
