>>1209226I don't live in Maine all year, I live there for two months every summer, and visit in the Winter from time to time.
Yes it's cold in the winter but not unbearable. When I visit, often I have to wait for the lake to freeze to get to my camp, because the logging roads that get there are burred in snow all winter, and too muddy till late spring.
But it's perfect in the summer.
I can highly recommend visiting the Moosehead area. Especially the small town of Monson, one of the last locations to shower and sleep indoors on the last 100 miles of the AT. My camp is only a few hours hike off the AT in the 100 mile wilderness.
I also recommend taking a few hours to hike Borestone Mountain if you are in the area. It's not that large, but it is a fun short hike, I often go there around 10am and have lunch on top.
