>>1699557>>1699557Even an expensive stationary rig requires LOS, that's how VHF and UHF works (or doesn't). If you want the most range out of your radio, get a license and hook up to a repeater. If you want an extended range on a handheld without having to get a license you'd need to set up a stationary module where your antenna is a precisely cut wire (pic related) hanging from a high and bare tree branch - but then all your long-range comms will require you to be stationary at the aforementioned module.
As far as your antenna goes, anything is better than the stock antenna. Those stock antennas are basically a coil, so most of your TX power is emitted as heat instead of RF. But a precisely-cut antenna measured to match your comms frequency will be your best tool at extending your range.
