Unknown to McCandless, there was a hand-operated tram that crossed the river only ¼ of a mile away from where he had previously crossed. In the 2007 documentary The Call of the Wild, evidence is presented that McCandless had a map at his disposal, which should have helped him find another route to safety.
It is also suggested that hunting only small game he might actually lose more calories then gain from it (rabbit starvation prevented eating brain, marrow, liver and all fat of the animal and not all meat - since it is so poor in fats it needs more energy to digest all the proteins that it actually gives you)
