For OP's question, I like desolate area/volcanic high desert. Just recently came back from Crater Lake, absolutely loved the outlying area. Lassen area, Flagstaff Arizona area are also favorites. All bubbling with hidden energy, black sand as a history of what once happened and can happen again at any time.
