I'm not advocating carrying just a .22 for all situations though. If you're in bear country during their active season, it's probably a good idea to carry something at least 9x19 or bigger. When I'm just going for a few days during grouse season when there is no possibility of encountering bears or jamal, I just bring a 22lr pistol.
