These animals eat the sapplings of the undergrowth of the forest, in a few hundred years the old trees die after none or little of their sapplings serving, the area becomes a grassland, which becomes a desert.
A forest without regeneration will die. In pic related should be shrubs, sapplings, etc. You shouldn't be able to see for more than a few feet depending on the forest.
