I miss those sunfish with their big mouths, as well as crappie. Just something that can hit stuff a little larger than UL lures. We have the Mayans and other cichlids, but they aren't quite like bluegill where they are always biting. And the bluegill here have the tiny mouths so you have to get some fatty ones to take anything besides a Mepps 00.

I've been looking at this pic from back in the day as I'm scrolling through them and I need to figure out what it is. I think it's a hybrid between a Mayan and something else.

Yeah catfish will run. It's hard to tell but it could've easily been a catfish. Eventually it gets a little easier to tell what is on the line but sometimes it will suprise you. I can normally tell whether I have a largemouth, snek, or Mayan before I ever see it dependkng how they run.

I'm not a huge fan of the hotdogs, I have used them before but mostly just bluegill will nibble. Bass don't seem to go for em. Just get a dozen nightcrawlers from Walmart for $2, anything will hit them.

I mean they are non-native but not sure if they are considered "invaisive" as well and carry a penalty for transferring them to different bodies or water.

I mentioned the Oscars which are a popular aquarium fish, so those Mayans might be available to buy as well. That's probably how they ended up in the lakes and canals. They are pretty when the get bigger. Some have a bit more red and some are more yellow-orange. I wonder if they will have that color when raised in aquariums.

They are also called "atomic sunfish".

I get that with largemouth and the finesse worms sometimes. They don't start fighting until you reel them in for a couple seconds. I'm not sure what it is, maybe because the worm is still in their mouth while the hook pulls forward, theh think they still got their meal.

And this fucking Mayan this afternoon. Got hooked by that treble with his mouth closed where two came through the top and one on the bottom. Those can be a bitch to get out.
