There just isn't as much wealth or comfort as living in one of the large cities. A lot of property and housing is being bought up by Californians etc. coming in. A lot of ranches are being sold to foreigners who can afford it. If your living in a double wide and working at the post office/liquor store (yes this was a combo in one town I stayed at), you can't afford the multi millions it costs to buy a chunk of cattle land, let alone an education. The winters can be real hard with the temps and the snow. You live with it, but it can be hard sometimes.
All that combined makes it easy for people to do drugs/alcohol, but the state also gives you amazing outdoor activites. I love the crazies, the river fishing in season is amazing, the plains are awesome. God is it pretty in the summer. Living in montana you also get to know people with property, and you can go out hunting pretty reliably since deer are pests. Knew one rancher who'd give you a box of bullets if you would go shoot prairie dogs for him. Helps having family living there, and grandpa was born there though.
